Laminated Glass – Safety and Performance with IGP

Laminated glass, also known as safety glass, has long been used in the automotive industry and is now a leading choice for residential and commercial applications. Thanks to its unique structure, laminated glass ensures maximum protection and superior durability.

What is laminated glass?

Laminated glass consists of two layers of glass bonded with an interlayer of PVB (polyvinyl butyral). This advanced structure prevents dangerous shattering, reduces noise transmission, and blocks harmful UV rays.

  • Enhanced safety: glass remains intact upon impact.
  • Acoustic comfort: improved noise insulation.
  • UV protection: minimizes fading of interiors.
  • Versatility: ideal for windows, partitions, facades, and storefronts.

Why it’s so great?

Laminated glass is often used as protection in glazing. The different layers of glass are separated by one or more synthetic elastic films, polyvinyl butyral (PVB). In the manufacture of this type of glass, the temperature and the pressure are so great that it becomes impossible to dissociate the PVB from the glass.

Which one do you need?

There are mainly 3 groups of laminated glasses:

1- Classic laminated glass:

it is more resistant than traditional glass because the PVB film avoids the projection of shards of glass and stiffens all but it can still break and be pierced.

2- Laminated safety glass:

It significantly reduces the risk of burglary and the risk of injury by keeping the pieces of glass against the PVB film, it is also harder to break and pierce.

2- Gel laminated glass:

it is a fireproof glass, it is designed to withstand fires.

The PVB film also acts as an ultraviolet UV filter and significantly attenuates the discoloration of what is behind the glass. Laminated glass can also be assembled in double glazing to add thermal and sound insulation to safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Laminated Glass Manufacturer in Montreal | Les Produits Verriers International

What is laminated glass and why choose it?

Laminated safety glass consists of 2 or more glass sheets bonded by a plastic interlayer film (PVB). When broken, pieces remain adhered to the film, providing anti-burglary protection and superior sound insulation meeting CSA Canadian standards.

What’s the difference between laminated and tempered glass?

Laminated glass keeps pieces together through the PVB film even when broken, offering continuous protection. Tempered glass fragments into small safe pieces but offers no protection after breakage. Laminated is ideal for security and sound insulation.

What thicknesses of laminated glass do you manufacture?

We manufacture laminated glass in compositions: 3+3mm, 4+4mm, 5+5mm, 6+6mm, 8+8mm, and asymmetric configurations like 6+4mm, 8+6mm according to your specific architectural project needs.

Can laminated glass be cut after manufacturing?

Yes, with precautions! Unlike tempered glass, laminated glass can be cut after manufacturing with specialized tools. However, it’s preferable to order to exact dimensions to avoid weakening the structure. Our technical consultants will guide you on feasibility.

What are the security levels of laminated glass?

We offer 3 levels: Classic (basic protection + sound insulation), Security (enhanced anti-burglary resistance), and Fire-Resistance (certified fire protection). Each level meets specific Canadian standards according to application.

Does laminated glass improve sound insulation?

Absolutely! The intermediate PVB film acts as a sound dampener, reducing noise transmission by 30-40 dB. Ideal for commercial facades, offices and residences near noisy areas in Montreal.

What applications do you recommend for laminated glass?

Laminated glass excels for: commercial storefronts, office facades, skylights, railings, acoustic partitions, and security applications. Particularly recommended for projects requiring both protection AND aesthetics.

What are your manufacturing lead times for laminated glass?

Our production lead times: standard laminated glass 5-7 days, special configurations 10-14 days, architectural projects 3-4 weeks. Fast delivery throughout Greater Montreal, Laval, Longueuil and South Shore.

Does laminated glass resist UV and weather conditions?

Yes! Our quality PVB film offers excellent UV protection, preserving interiors from fading. Resistant to Quebec’s freeze-thaw cycles and thermal variations. Long-term warranty for exterior applications.

Do you supply hardware with laminated glass?

Of course! IGP* is the only Quebec manufacturer offering laminated glass + hardware: more than 2,500 specialized pieces (reinforced mounting systems, structural supports) adapted to the superior weight of laminated glass.

Is laminated glass suitable for LEED projects?

Perfect! Our laminated glass contributes to LEED credits through its thermal insulation, solar control and durability performance. We provide all necessary environmental documentation for your green building projects.
